Join us as we team up with Organizing for America to push for comprehensive education reform!
As part of United We Serve (the White House initiative for community volunteerism), OC3 and Orange County Democrats will be hosting a book drive to honor the Orange County Literacy Council's 25 years of service to our community. New and gently used books for all ages are welcome, but we are especially interested in children's books. Collection bins for books have been set up at all 3 Weaver Street Markets (Carrboro, Hillsbourgh, and Southern Village), Mapleview Ice Cream Shop, Cup of Joe's at Timberlyne, Seymour Senior Center, Waldenbooks at University Mall, Great Outdoor Provision Company at Eastgate, and Barnes and Noble at New Hope Commons. So please donate what you can, help get the word out, and let us know if you can pick up books at one of the collection sites during this time.
Books will be distributed to various organizations for distribution to disadvantaged members of our community ( for example we are considering the food banks, homeless shelters, lower income housing units etc.). We also would appreciate your suggestions on this matter and if you would like to help with this part - let us know.
The Summer DREAM Campaign, sponsored by Adelante Education Coalition, is aiming to mobilize grassroots support for the DREAM Act, federal legislation which would provide a pathway to naturalization for undocumented students who either attend college or join the military for 2 years. NC Senator Kay Hagan is one of few newly elected senators who do not currently support the DREAM Act: Join us in telling her that ALL CHILDREN ARE DESERVING OF THE AMERICAN DREAM!
OC3 participated in a lobby day with Adelante and NC legislators. There are a series of events across NC through the end of the summer, so if you would like to participate in other postcard-signing opportunities send an email to: summerdreamnc@gmail.com
